This exceptional private pressing captures a pivotal moment in the South African beat scene during the height of the mid sixties musical explosion. Transitioning from their origins as the beat group Ricky and the Martinets, the ensemble rebranded as the Kalimba Group in 1965 to reflect a sophisticated new direction that integrated traditional African rhythmic influences with the contemporary beat sound.

The quartet featured the talents of lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Ricky Wolff, who later achieved international success with the UK act White Plains, alongside lead guitarist Martin Sack, bassist Alec van der Post, and drummer Les Markowitz.

Recorded just before the group relocated to London in September 1965, this rare extended play serves as a vital historical document of the Pretoria music scene and the early professional years of musicians who would go on to become prominent studio figures and engineers.

The release showcases a unique blend of vocal harmonies and instrumental textures, featuring tracks like Pezulu Kalimba and Jungle Fever on the first side, both driven by the distinctive singing of Ricky Wolff and Martin Sack. The second side continues the exploration of Afro-centric themes with Mamwane Kufiki Munda and the melodic The Wind, highlighting the group’s versatility and their pioneering role in bridging diverse musical traditions.

Produced under the Melody Music imprint with the catalog number PR 30, this South African pressing remains a highly sought after artifact for collectors of global beat music and those documenting the evolution of regional rock history. It stands as a testament to the creative ambition of young South African artists during a transformative era of global sound.
