The Dream of the Blue Turtles is the debut solo studio album by Sting, released in 1985 on A&M Records. Following the initial breakup of The Police, the album marked a decisive artistic shift, blending jazz, pop, rock, and sophisticated adult contemporary influences.
Rather than using a traditional rock backing band, Sting assembled a group of respected jazz musicians, including Branford Marsalis, Kenny Kirkland, Darryl Jones, and Omar Hakim. This lineup gave the album a refined, harmonically rich sound that distinguished it sharply from his earlier work.
Key tracks include If You Love Somebody Set Them Free, Fortress Around Your Heart, Russians, Moon Over Bourbon Street, Love Is the Seventh Wave, and We Work the Black Seam. Lyrically, the album addresses themes of politics, love, responsibility, and global tension, reflecting mid‑1980s Cold War anxieties.
