Released in October 1978, this twelfth studio album marked a major turning point as the first Elton John project where Gary Osborne replaced Bernie Taupin as the primary lyricist. It was also his first album since his 1969 debut to be produced without Gus Dudgeon.

The album is famous for the hit "Part-Time Love" and the poignant instrumental closer "Song for Guy," dedicated to Guy Burchett, a young messenger boy for Rocket Records who died in a motorcycle accident. The gatefold sleeve features a classic car image across the inner spread.
